  • Negative and Positive Rake

    I think we have done this before, but what the differences between positive and negative rake, aand what are the advantages and disadvantages?

    Hello Jerry,
    I know that on radial saw blades that a
    zero or negative rake is prefered because
    a positive rake tends to self feed and can
    cause the blade to try to climb up on top of the piece that you are attempting to cut.
    In the proper use a radial saw is pulled stiff armed towards you and if it has positive rake it will try to self feed and
    climb up on the stock and bind the blade between the stock and the table.I believe
    that a positive rake on any cutting tool will tend to self feed whereas negative rake
    will not.

      Negative rake gives a better finish on smaller lathes and it requires less power.

      Positive rake usually results in a longer life of the cutting edge.
