when it comes to bicycles, when I was a boy my parents couldn't afford one for me, even and old clunker could be bought for around five pounds or less but that was a big chunk of my fathers salary. However with a great flood of bicycles from China today most kids can afford one as the prices here have dropped and dropped. It is the same with living room furniture a three piece suite, I e a couch and two armchairs thirty years ago cost two or three times what they can cost today. Going back to bicycles see if this suits your pocket. Alistair

That's the uppper end of a Mid priced bike in the Scheme of things. You can pay far more than that for unmotorized road or mountain bikes. -

I've been riding mountain bikes, including fairly high end stuff, for many years and I can assure you those prices don't suit my pocket. And don't get me started on bicycle depreciation.Comment

Its relative though, a Unimat may seem expensive to a guy whose budget is more in line for a grizzly lathe.
I have been around the fringes of bikes for a long time, so I see a few things and know people that raced and ran bike stores.
Curiously thogh, the guys with the high end ones usually dont regret having them.
There us a high end roadbike bike that a guy brings to a near by coffee shop. I knew it was pricey, so one day I looked it up, they had two versions. A consumer oriented one and a race shop version.
So I asked if is the race shop of the other.. he said race shop.. those are 14 or 15 K in US dollars.
I had a customer, a weight weenie building a very light weight bike.
Uphill sprinter, one cluster.. came in at under 10 lbs.
When he finished it, it was like the 3rd lightest bike in the world.
But he built a lot of it himself on a low budget. . Around 10 K maybe? The other 2 had40 K or more into them.
He had a 3 in 1 machine, that he knew a bit about using, so I started to help him.
Because I knew he was not wealthy and had the desire to learn .
I think he needed a 27 tooth or similar ratchet tooth for his freewheel. So I showed him how, (or rather explained how) to do it without an index head. And off he would go and make it and save some cash..Comment

If money were no object I would own one of these - a KTM scarp sonic - full suspension 29er at only 20.2lbs
but it's like $9,990.00 ouch - can't justify a bike that's so much faster than i am
but they make a scarp master at half the price and it's 24lbs that i could see but still would need to pick up a good used one at around 3,500 to justify it...
E-bikes are slugs - they are not allowed on our trails around here they are considered a motorized vehicle so are illegal to ride where we do and im sooooo glad...Comment

If I don't have a plan for what to do when I see some random skel riding it, I won't spend more than chump change on it. I ride a $40 thrift store bike like the one above.Comment

Used to work with a guy that finally splurged on himself and bought a new, custom made titanium frame for himself. $7000. Just the frame, nothing else. Had about that much again into it before he even rode it. You can certainly spend much more than that. It was beautiful though. And insanely light.
I've got so many hobbies, and interests. I'd really hate to add it all up. Probably would be much more than that $14000 bike. Wuld you believe there are some people out there who DON'T have lathes and mills in their garages? Crazy lolComment

with the vertical gain that i go through on most rides weight is actually a very big factor, if i was a flat land roadie i would not even worry about it - just a little extra tire and bearing friction but with some welcomed stored momentum,,, I would put my money more where it counts and concentrate on cheating the wind...Originally posted by Dan Dubeau View Post

Bikes are a bit like lathes, many folks are happy with a cheap or middle of the road unit..
And then there are guys that must have a DSG lathe or a Unimat, and would not be happy with a lesser unit..
The good thing about cheap heavy bikes, you get exercised quicker..Comment

I hear you about just cruising around but with the people I ride with a really heavy bike would be nothing but discouraging and cause you to lose hope and not train as much and maybe even drop out of it, not to mention be flat out dangerous as weight also goes with refinement and quality, im still entering bike races and like to compete,
lathe or bikes it's very hard to get used to something nice and then downgrade, My friends Hardinge super precision turret chucker comes to mind in the machine world...
and my current bike although a little hefty is still the best iv ever owned...Comment
