Ah - I mainly did that because the casting of the column was all over the place and didn;t want to machine 'too much' out of it. So I just made a 2 inch wide slot to mate the riser block.

Understood fitting within the column recess above.
I should have worded it differently i guess.
I was thinking less machining if the "male" part of the riser block was more "square" with radiused corners to fit inside the column and poossibly add more surface area for contact/ bolting.

Seems you have that spindle dialed in nicely Sam.

In the last week, I went to closed loop spindle with Linuxcnc on my bridgeport with VFD powered motor and spindle encoder. BOY does closed loop work great !

(the BIG trick with closed loop spindle is the use of the maxerrorI pin for the PID loop, THAT prevents overshoot yet remains aggressive)

Finally carved out some time to work on it... Trying a better spindle drive.. so far so good.

working on getting a spindle encoder mounted.. There isn't an easy way to mount an actual encoder - so I went with a gear and using gear tooth sensors..

Machined a gear and mounted it to the spindle pully (the gear was something we had laying around...) 36 tooth + index



This is where is is going to live...



Testing the index hole... (pully flipped...)



Making a bracket... (the gear tooth sensors will be potted when I am sure the quadrature signal looks good)
