    Hi,

A very long time ago I used a large and heavy face mill that needed inserts at least similar to these. Each insert was brazed to the tool and then ground to even the tool height. The grooves go to the "backside". For the life of me, I cannot remember the brand name.

Even though it cut nice, it was not the best idea overall. I remember needing to send it out for repair whenever some 300lbs idiot broke enough inserts to warrant it. Even had to send it back out once when some clown dropped it on the mill table after a fresh rebuild.
If you think you understand what is going on, you haven't been paying attention.
