Went to 12 garage sales on Saturday bought this https://www.makitatools.com/products/details/XMT03Z for 5 bucks and this https://www.makitatools.com/products/details/BO5041 5 bucks and finally a Craftsman 4 1/2" corded grinder https://www.sears.com/craftsman-10a-...&blockType=G25 for 10 bucks.

a few years back I was eyeballing my stash, trying to decide what I would keep if I moved across town, across the state, or across the country

bottom line: everything I would not take came from yard sales, swap meets, pawn shops...

43 years as an electronics tech. my house looks like a library, a surplus store, a motorcycle shop, a camera store, a TV store, and a hardware store, in 1600 square feet.

no point going to garage or estate sales around here, everything is retail price + 10%. Seriously, this area is the worst I've ever been for garage sales in all the places I've lived around the world. They truly do think that they have a stash of gold for sale.

Now, on the other hand, they throw out some really nice stuff for free - picked up a Craftsman rapid life floor jack, needed a clean and some oil but works perfectly, also a small chainsaw, bunch of other bits'n'pieces and recently a Dell PC tower with a quad core Intel CPU. Haven't stuck a HDD in it yet to see what's wrong with it, but should be able to figure it out. Actually found that one on the curb outside the same place that was selling small glass trinkets for $5 each. Crazy.

I scan Craigslist for estate / moving / garage sales. I ignore any posts that do not have pictures. I look for images of very cluttered, over stuffed, messy garage or basement with tools present. I might visit 2 or 3 sales per month and will not go more than 10 miles out of my way. About 18 months ago a garage sale listing caught my eye: Logan lathe was pictured, among other items. I have a larger Clausing and had no interest in a smaller lathe but I figured there was bound to be other metalworking related items. I scored a 1.5 hp high speed step belt B'port head for $20! http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/thr...just-bought%29 I finally found a B'port base with a 42 inch table that was missing it's head and now am building up my replacement mill (current B'port has a 32 inch table).

This past Saturday I stopped at an estate sale 4 blocks from my workshop garage after attending NAMES. Was the end of the sale and the card file cabinet ((poor man's Lista) shown in the Craigslist add, had sold on Friday). I filled a grocery bag (actually multiple layers of bags to keep from tearing) with several spools of rosin core solder from about 1/32 dia up to 1/8 inch, lots of electrical test leads, new steel electrical boxes, new duplex outlets and various cover plates, several small hand tools, sandpaper flap wheels, numerous hose clamps, 3/8 UNC SS hex head bolts, SS U-bolts, and more. Set me back $5.

This weekend we looked at 54 yard sales in one day! Got two decent buys. A Weller 325 watt soldering gun for $20, to donate to the robotics club for soldering large motor leads. The other a Milwaukee 3/8” Hole Shooter in nice shape for $5. About 30 years old and just like the one I already own. This one WILL tear your arm off if you get it stuck!

One thing we noticed, in our town which is not wealthy there are always a fair amount of tools at yard sales. In the neighboring hoity toity town of fancy homes there are plenty of yard sales but we almost never see tools.

Yep, here the place to go for tools is South St Louis, or North county. The middle section is all richer areas, where they pay folks to do everything, and don't know which end of the screwdriver is the handle.

Our town has an annual yard sale day which my grandson and I like to attend on our bikes. Last year a guy had a nice Rockwell commercial table saw and I didn't need one as I had a junk Skil table saw that was fine for what I need. When he said $100 though I paid him and rode home to get the car! Then I found out it was way to big to use in my shed. So I traded it to the shop where I work for the $400 portable Dewalt table saw which was really nice, and the shop got a saw with legs, wheels, cast iron top and really nice rip fence that cost about $1200 new. Got $20 for the Skil table saw at the yard sale the next day!

Chris ( my significant other )turned me on to yard sales. Estate auctions also is something I like going to. Most here are 99% are household stuff. I have picked up some items to repurposed in the shop.

I go to to at least 400 a year. Mainly look for music CD's (presently I have 3830 CD's ripped into my computer) and tools. Went to 10 today.

In my part of the world its also getting quiet. We dont have e bay so most of my stuff is from auctions or classifieds . But at the rate of auctions these days I wont live long enough to get what I need.

You are sorta new to this ?
A lot of us go at it hard in the beginning, then as we start getting more stuff we taper off.
Plus we built a lot of things in house to get us through what we need

Off and on for the last 30 years, but really got back into it around 8 years ago. I'm in the Los Angeles area. There are a LOT of sales year round here. The dealers and flippers around here are like rabid dogs. The sales have steadily declined in quality over the past few years, no doubt. Out of every hundred sales, 90 are crap, 7 are OK, 2 are pretty good, and one is stellar. I'm a talker, and have met all kinds of people, which keeps it interesting to me. I still have fun doing it. When it stops being fun, and it is just a chore, I will stop.
