  • 2D measuring software

    I would like to have a program in which I can open a scanned image, define a known X dimension and Y dimension and then from there be able to measure the distance between any two points on the image with reasonable accuracy. I have found that if I use a flatbed scanner with a CIS type sensor that the dimensions are pretty darn good... even if the object isn't completely flat. CCD scanners not so much due to the way they image. In the past I have placed a ruler next to objects while scanning and then used image editing software to 'measure' with results that well exceeded my requirements. A little more convenience would be welcome though. It's been my intention to knock out basic program myself but it seems quite often that things I want already exist so I thought I would inquire here first.

        I would suggest ImageJ. It's free too. I use it to measure things with my microscopes, such as diatoms. I also sharpen scalpel blades and figured out the angle of the grind with ImageJ. Pretty powerful program that has a TON of free plugins too.

            I use a scanner, and import into the image into rhino. Usually I lay a 6" scale on the bed beside the piece so I can get the scale right. From there I can draw over the image, and take dimensions, etc. Coupled with a couple hard measurements via calipers, mics etc it's pretty accurate for all the stuff I've used it for over the years. But I'll be watching this to check for better ways. I use this method quite a bit, so if there's a better way I'd love to know. Very handy for making things like motorcycle case covers, gaskets, nest for tools/gauges, equipment faceplates, etc.

            I used to have a couple sheets of transparent graph paper that were great to lay the parts on and help scale, but they've been lost over time.

              I was able to import image into LibreCAD (freeware) and dimension aspects of the image without a problem. Haven't tested for accuracy, but it is promising. I like this software as it is very close to AutoCAD version I was used to using. Hope this helps.

                I do what Dan does. Take a picture with camera and use the Picture option in Rhino. With careful tracing the holes as close to centered as possible and close to on size. Draw a line from center of two of the holes and measure where the line intersects the circles.

                Then measure the edge of hole relative to edge of other hole on the part. This will give you a scale factor between the part and the drawing. Use the scale factor to resize the drawing. Redraw the holes to the exact size of those in the part.

                The larger you can stretch the picture and still see details the better. You errors will shrink by the scale factor.

                      Here's what it would look like in ImageJ to take a few measurements of a razor blade. The "results" box show the results of the measurements I took. I could have configured it to KEEP the RED lines on the razor blade but I didn't. Pretty simple to use in my opinion. I scanned the scale, then scanned the razor blade image. Did a spatial calibration on the two images, then started to measure with the line tool. Obviously the two images are zoomed differently.

                        I apologize that I haven't followed up to this thread I started. I haven't had time to work on any relevant projects since then however I did download and start looking at ImageJ and it looks like it will do what I was asking. Thank you all.

                          You are talking about a 2D sub-set of photogrammetry, the process of measuring things from photos. Normally PG measures objects in 3D using a reference object (or several). The technique is sufficiently advanced that it has passed the Daubert test in federal courts.

                          Try looking at this recent list of 14 PG programs and see if one will suit your needs.
