  • Ot- semi w 40k lbs of bees

Anybody remember the debate about the airplane on the treadmill?. Fun times. That spawned a lot of interesting ideas and debate. (Good old days w Evan etc)

So I read a news story today. I guess a truck crashed with 40,000 pounds of bees in it. I was half heartedly chuckling to myself + thinking “well if they’re all in the air how much does the truck really carrying/weigh?”

(Yes I know hives and honey weigh something)

    Let’s subtract that.
Let’s say all bees, 40k lbs of them. What is net change in truck weight when they all decide to hover?
(I”ve felt the brief down pressure of a 737 50’ over me before)

    What say you?

Maybe that's what happened. They all decided to hover at once ...or few over to one side!

I feel very badly for the beekeeper and the farmers, and I hope they had insurance on the load.

          That said, let it bee.

          In other words RUN !!!!!

This isn't the first time this has happened. I remember a few years back seeing on TV a similar mishap, either in California, or enroute there. It might not've been a wreck, but rather a mechanical breakdown.

Seems like, in that instance, there was an issue with keeping the bees from over heating.

The answer is zero change. The truck will weigh the same. This was proved by one of the Mythbusters episodes years ago.

Your "down force" clue was the give-away and reminded me of the show.

Is that the same as jumping just before the falling elevator hits the ground?

I don't think there is much room for them to fly inside of the hive. My mom had beehives for several years and I never got the impression that honey bees fly inside of the hives at all so I say it weighs the weight of the bees and the hives.
