  • Spade drill holder

I just got gifted some spade drill tips. I would like to machine my own holders. I got a close up photo of one off of Goggle. My question is has anyone machined up their own spade drill holders?

There are many different styles of tips. It depends which ones you have.

If you subscribe to the Magazine, there was an article about making the holder for whatever style the author had. Prolly a couple years ago now.

If they are 1/4" hex, take $ 10 to HD, get a Irwin 12" extension with a quick release clutch. I had to drill 20 ea. 1 1/2 holes 6" deep in cherry, no problems except for a sore wrist.

I think he is talking about metal spade drills, which are a lot different than wood spade drills.

I’ve subscribed for several years, but don’t remember the article. Can you reference it. I’m assuming your speaking of Home Shop Machinist

Not sure if this is the article that you are thinking of, but a quick search of the article index found this:

Spade Drill Holder Don Wiederhold Shop Accessories HSM Vol. 34 No. 1 Jan-Feb 2015 24

I don't know if I have that particular issue so I could not look to see the details, but it sounds like what you are after.

The following link shows how a spade drill bit holder might be constructed:

The patent may give you some ideas:

Now I need to go digging through my stuff to see if I have that issue here someplace.
Looking forward to see what you come up with!

I’ll look to see if I have that issue, it may be one I let a friend have. My plan is to use rage blade, the photo and work out the first holder. Even used holders on EBay is expensive.

I just looked at my copy, it is Jan/Feb 2015. The article shows a holder for 130 degree spades. I don't know if flat bottom spades work with the same holder or not.

All of the big names such as Sandvik and Kennametal produce this type of drill system, but there is no standardisation you could rely on.
