  • OT: use.com closing down

I've heard use.com mentioned here a few times. It's for hosting images. I went to have a look at it, and it's closing down today. If you have files on it, you have until September 15th to download them.

Thanks for the notice. That's really sad, because they were great. Generous unlimited size on images, video hosting support. And the user interface was constant - it didn't change. It especially did not change to force advertising on you. They also actually responded to support emails. I did wonder how they could be making enough money..

At least they're going out with serious class - offering bulk download of all your images, and advance warning. Who else does that?

"Use.com is no longer accepting uploads.

The site will be closing effective September 20th, 2019

We will continue to serve images until September 4th, 2019

Registered members will be able to request a download of ALL their currently hosted images and videos through September 15th, 2019. Click for details

Your profile page will be available until September 20th, 2019 or the expiration date of your processed archive download, whichever is latest."

And that is why they are shutting down.

You get what you pay for. Nothing gets you nothing. As I have suggested previously, the safest options are (1) use images hosted on this site, (2) use Wikimedia, or (3) purchase your own domain and web server space for your images. I have several domains, which cost about $10-$15 per year. And I have web space (virtually unlimited) through www.1and1.com, which is about $10/mo. At one time I used www.dreamhost.com, but I experienced some problems, so I changed hosts. I did have to copy all my files, with the same directory structure, to 1and1, but that was fairly easy using Filezilla FTP client. Then I just used URL forwarding to redirect URLs to my new server, using the same domain name, and all my images still worked everywhere. The only downside, perhaps, is that when I no longer pay for the services, the images will no longer appear. Hosting them here on HSM guarantees they will be available as long as the forum exists, or until they decide to eliminate hosting (which does incur some cost). Wikimedia and Google images may have some permanence, but who knows what will happen 20 years from now?
