  • Getting the bugs out...... and winning!!!!

    Well after 8 months of near inactivity in the shop circumstances have changed for the best and I'm back at it.

    When I last worked on my little lathe I was not getting a good finish on steel turnings. Brass and aluminium wasn't to bad but with steel chatter was a problem.

    It seems that the problem was with the chuck. All I did was make a heavier backing plate for it and the chatter problem is gone. I guess that it needed a flywheel to smooth out the transmission of power from the motor.

    This is a piece of hot rolled mild steel.....


    Here is the old back plate...............


    And here is the chuck mounted on the heavy back plate..............


    The next thing to do is to get the power feed up and running.

    I think I see a carbide toolbit in the toolpost, HSS would work better.

        Bill, you are right, it does work better with HSS but I want it to work well with carbide to.

          That is the coolest! Gotta ask; What's the coffee can on the back for? And what's "XRD"?

              Wow! That looks great George. Did you build the compound? Are we goimg to see the project in HSM? If so I think it'll be a great project.

                Excellent work George. It looks like something out of Blade Runner.

                Are those square tubes from stationary battery rack?

                    The coffee can covers the open frame motor that I am going to use for the power feed.

                    XRD = eXe ReDesigned (look here.. http://www.lathes.co.uk/exe/page3.html )

                    The compound came from 'Smithy'. I intend to build one for this lathe once I have all the bugs out of it.

                    HSM artical? Possibly an artical showing how to build some of the components that would be usefull to others who would like to design and build thier own small lathe.

                    The square tubing is just 2-1/2" seamless hitch tubing.

                    My goal when I started this project was to build a good working lathe from readily available materials. So far, so good.

                    I think that I will give it a good test by building the "Buoy" engine from the latest Machinist's Workshop.

                      Try sharpening the carbide tool bit with a good quality diamond grinding wheel to get a sharp edge with a slight radius on the tip for the finish cut. Your tool does not look very sharp.
