  • rod for Tig welding Titanium?

Any hints on which rod to use to TIG Ti? Alloy is either grade 2 or 5. Also, which tungsten to use?As for gas, Argon?
    thanks,

Re gas, I've been using straight argon on G11 Ti. Just checked the wire but can't find any numbers. I've had it so long I can't even remember where I got it. I've got a feeling it's just CP Ti wire. Runs a beautiful bead but you need high gas flow. Slightest sign of blue and the part is worthless. You may need back purge and trailer shield if you're doing anything more than small parts.

Oh, tungsten is just the usual 1% thorium I use for everything else

If the weld is a critical application it may require a specific alloy for the seam for chemical or strength considerations. If it is a mundane application - don't worry about it.

Astrolite in California sells Ti welding wire. I just bought 2.5 pounds (@ $85.00/lb) of the stuff...only problem is they have a $200.00 minimum. Wire arrives in argon shielded protective bags, cool. http://www.astrolite.com/pages/prod.htm
I use a laser welded with argon gas, so I do not know about what tungsten to use.

Are you nuts - or just have too much money?

              What a waste of Ti...
