  • Forgive me Master Builder for I have sinned

Yes I admit it. I did it. I succombed to peer group pressure.

Where to start. hmmmm Well I so badly wanted to make round balls with my lathe. Balls so round and shiny that everyone would be impressed with my turning skills.

So I took a drill a drill so shiny and sharp that it was like nothing on this earth.

And that drill sung to me it sang how it wished to be plunged into metal and spun round and round until nothing but a magnificent round hole was formed.

I was mesmorised by this singing. It put me under it's spell. It made me do it.

So I grabbed my cross slide from the lathe and did so plunge the said drill into it and created a magnificent round hole a hole, so round and true it should not be of this world.

And then I plunged again and another hole was born.

Then a grabbed a 8mm tap and it also sung to me. It sang grand songs of how much wonder it could bring to me if only I would place it in the magnificent holes and rotate it.

So I placed the tap in the hole. And then rotated the said tap to create a wonderous thread. A thread so beautiful I believed the Master Builder would be pleased with my effort.

But then reality struck and the euphorism wore off. What had I done??? My God what had I done. Now my lathe. My beautiful lathe was unoriginal. It had been defaced by the two said holes in the cross slide.

I defiled the machine, the machine that another true believer in Taiwan had spent many countless hours building only for me to treat it like something lower than a snakes belly.

If only.......If only I had not read that thread about the ball turning tool...If only that drill had not sung to me...

If only I had bought a lathe with T Slots on the cross slide then I would not have had to drill those holes in the cross slide.

    Please forgive me Master Builder......

My lathe likes chips in the pan - kinda like scratchin' an itch.

You know, a beautiful woman is a total waste unless she gets defiled now and then.

I'm sure glad my SB9 came with two 5/16 threaded holes already in the cross slide, from the factory. Whew. I sure wouldn't want to go through what Ringer did. No siree. Not ever.

Thats nothing, its a useful, neatly done mod.Me I have an old conehead lathe that was given to me,30x120",the guy beforeme needed a gap in the bed just ahead of the chuck,he did it with an arc gouging rod now that is blasphemy!
I just need one more tool, just one!

No I wasn't on anything when I wrote that..

I already had two holes on the cross slide that the taper turning attachment bolted to.

I put the other two near the top slide. I drilled and tapped them them so I can bolt on other attachments like the ball turning tool(when I make it).

You can't use the term Master Builder and Taiwan in the same passage.

You have to accept these are kit machines and those two holes were probably missing because OneHungLow was behind on his daily quota of 2,487 machines.

THANK YOU THANK YOU. Neither my ball turner (tested last night) or my mill attachment will work right because I,ve been unwilling to make the Rice Gods angry and swiss cheese my cross slide 'TIL NOW!

Ah, grasshopper. Now you may form perfect spheres, through drill them and part them off. You must now part them into hemispheres, paint them white, and place them in your eye sockets. Then you too will be a master oriental machinist and look just like me, Kwai Chang Cain
