The US has decided over the years to ignore the Shkval capability because it is a suicide weapon. When you launch it you reveal your location, irrevocably. But it is a serious threat and cannot be defended against. All the space lasers and hypervelocity strike interceptors are not going to work when you only have a few seconds notice.

My point is that the huge sums of money spent on wasteful exercises like the ballistic missle defense system would be better spent on something as simple as new schools. It seem that the Canadian government, for a change, agrees with me.

The suicide aspect of the Squall refers to the possibility that, if armed with a nuclear warhead, the firing sub could also be destroyed by the blast. It is also called a revenge weapon for this reason. Any sub reveals its position when firing a missile or torpedo.

It is thought that the Squall has already sunk one submarine. Unfortunately, it was the Kursk. Don't you hate it when that happens? Perhaps we should encourage it's sale to potential beligerants based on its track record.

Canada will never spend a lot of money on developing defense systems because they don't have to. They are protected by the umbrella of anything the US develops. We have to include Canada to protect our border. Thus Canadians can sit back and smugly badmouth US policies, secure in knowing that those very policies are protecting them.

It helps that we aren`t considered pricks by the rest of the world, too.
