  • 5/8-56 tap

Over the pond in the Model Engineer forum, a member has asked about the 5/8-56 tap he has. It has a plain front end which is intended to function as a pilot. One of the members found a reference to its use in gunsmithing. It has a ground thread, the size and NSVT on the shank. Anybody recognise the application?

Wow. That's an odd one. Are you sure about the size?

I can't think of anything outsise optics or metrology which might use a thread like that.

I saw the same question. As for gunsmithing, it could possibly be used to tap 20 Ga shotgun barrels to install interchangeable choke tubes, The diameter seems right, but the TPI (56) does not match up with the standard choke tubes listed on the internet. Rick

Old Mart: I came across some taps at an auction years ago that originated in an instrument shop. Almost all of them were very fine threads, odd sizes.
