    The main reason the pros use the traditional strikers is for safety -- its the safest way to do the job. Any good training course will include this point. Also -- its a lot less fumbling around, which is also a safety issue. Disclaimer: I'm one of the trained pros. I've also been on fire, literally, in the past. There is a reason for everything.

      The safety department enforced this rule. I disagreed but they were God around here

        They don't tend to walk away like matches or a lighter, and they put your hands much further from the flame.
        It's all mind over matter.
        If you don't mind, it don't matter.

          They are safe, they work, they work one-handed, you can have gloves on and use them, and when they are not in use, they pose no hazard unless you step on one or have one dropped on you (where's your hard hat?).
