If it helps, a dead center in tail stock can pin the center of an existing hole or layout lines before you clamp down to the faceplate.

Could they be purpous built jaws to center a rectangle?
If the wider jaws are a suspiciously exact number wider like a half-inch or something it...

You can look at the threads on the bottom of the jaws and order them with each starting a little further from the front (or back)
if they can't...

I have one, the largest chuck I use on my 10" Logan, it is nice when I need it but not for everyday use if I can help it.
It is easy to clean...
